Harlingen – United League Baseball’s Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today they have signed Jonathan Poterson, the 2004 first round pick (37th overall) of the New York Yankees, to play third base.

They also signed left fielder Ricardo Santana.

A 23-year old switch-hitter from Gilbert, Arizona, Poterson was drafted out of high school and started his career with the Gulf Coast Yankees, where he played in 56 games in 2004, hitting .202 with seven home runs and 30 RBI.

Poterson split the 2005 and 2006 seasons between Charleston (South Atlantic League, Class A) and Staten Island (New York-Penn League, Short-Season A), playing in the outfield. His best stint was with Staten Island in 2005, when he hit .247 with six home runs and 52 RBI in 75 games.

Poterson spent the last two seasons with Chillicothe of the Frontier League. In 2007, he hit .231 with a career-high 27 doubles, seven home runs and 65 RBI.

Santana comes to the WhiteWings for his fifth season of Independent baseball. Santana began his career with Rockford (Frontier League) in 2005 and 2006 before moving onto Atlantic City and Worcester (Can-Am League) in 2007. He spent last year with Worcester as well.

Santana is a career .255 hitter with 17 home runs and 110 RBI in 212 games (787 at-bats). He has 40 doubles and two triples to go with 112 runs scored. His biggest asset maybe his speed as Santana has stolen 49 bases in 60 attempts.
