Motorcycles enjoy a special place among Mexicans. Whether for personal transportation, courier services, commercial use, or simply as a sport or leisure activity, motorcycles play an important role in Mexican society.
This is shown by the boom in sales of motorcycles since the year 2000. Traffic congestion in large cities, a scarcity of parking spaces, and the diversity of highways, dirt roads or trails, coupled with the versatility of motorcycles, have made the motorcycle a favorite of Mexicans.
The 95.1% increase in motorcycle imports during the period of 2002 through 2008 shows the growth of Mexico’s motorcycle market. In spite of a decrease in market growth during the end of 2008 and during 2009, which was felt in many other areas of the economy, a firm recovery is expected in 2010.
Motorcycles with engine sizes ranging from 50 to 2,000 cubic centimeters are sold in Mexico, with two, three or four wheels. The offering of motorcycles in Mexico is adapted to consumer use, activity and preferences; hence, the broad range of motorcycle models available: sports, racing, work, leisure and all-terrain.
In 2008, most motorcycles were sold in the Federal District, Jalisco, Quintana Roo, Veracruz and Michoacan. Over 75% of motorcycles sold in Mexico have engines ranging from 51 to 125 cubic centimeters in size.
Interest in motorcycles by Mexico’s business markets is demonstrated by the success of the seventh edition of the International Motorcycle Expo that took place in late 2009, which was attended by manufacturers, assembly plants, dealers, agents and importers of motorcycles.
The motorcycle makers that participated in such event included BMW, BRP (can-am) Buell, Cagiva, Harley-Davidson, Husqvarna, LML, Margies, MV Augusta, Seadoo, Sachs, Suzuki, Vespa, andYamaha, among others.
