SAN JUAN, TX-- The City of San Juan is preparing for their Centennial this year kicking off San Juan’s Cinco de Mayo celebration at the San Juan Municipal Park on May 1st from 10 am - 9pm. The festival will feature live music, school performances, sports tournaments, kid fish catch/release pond, games, rides and a sanctioned BBQ cook-off. The internationally recognized band Del Castillo will headline the festival’s night-time concert.
As a measure to bolster competition and diversity in grilling style, the San Juan Cook-Off event will be sanctioned by the International Barbecue Cooker's Association. There will over $2,000 in cash and prizes for placing 1st thru 5th place, so fire up those South Texas grills. Categories included in this year's contest are: fajita, chicken, pork spare ribs, and brisket. Top five competitors will be recognized and a grand prize will be awarded. Proceeds from cook off will be donated to the Parks and Recreation Scholarship Fund. For a complete list of rules, go to www.cityofsanjuantexas.com.
The Cinco de Mayo committee is also seeking sponsors to participate in the festivities with five different levels of sponsorship available. Levels are: El Musico $3000, El Bandolon $2000, El Tambor $1000, El Viloncello $500 and El Arpa $200. Deadline for sponsorship submissions is April 15 to allow for marketing opportunities on TV, radio and print media. Interested parties may call San Juan EDC at 956-783-3448 for more information.
Individuals interested in reserving a vendor booth for this year’s event may sign up at the Parks and Registration office 301 Hall Acres Rd or call San Juan Parks and Recreation at 956-783-9927. Booth fees are $40 for nonprofits organization and $50 for profit businesses. Booths will be reserved on a first come first serve basis with the limitation of only selling two items.
