McAllen's New Palm View Splash Pad to Open Tuesday, July 3

            McAllen --- McAllen’s new Palm View Splash Pad, at 3401 Jordan Avenue, will open Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at 9 am with an official ceremony and refreshments.

The new addition to the McAllen Parks and Recreation park system will feature several above ground water features including an aqua arch, a jet way, a water worm, and a baby long legs. Also included are a dandelion dome, a water rail, a water flower, a roll-a-rail, an air stick, an over n under sprayer, a turn a round sprayer, and big sqwerts sprayer- dolphins. Six sets of picnic tables are available for rental. A set of two tables and grill can be reserved starting July 9, 2012 for $25, for two-hour increments.

          The project cost the City of McAllen $525,000 and was funded through monies remaining from the library fountains and park zone budget. This is the second spray ground constructed in McAllen. In 2010, the City hosted a grand opening for its first splash park, at 29thand Zinnia.

“Based on the amount of use we’ve seen at the park at Zinnia, we think the new Palm View Splash Pad will be an instant hit, “said McAllen Mayor Richard F. Cortez.“Here in McAllen, we’re committed to adding quality of life amenities for our residents and this new park is another example of the commitment we’ve made.”

           The park is open to the public from 10 am to 8 pm and there is no fee to use the facility. In order to use the park, children must be 6 years and older, be accompanied by an adult and must wear bathing suits. No animals and glass containers are permitted in the play area.

“This is a great addition to our community. With our hot summers, the new Palm View Splash Pad will offer children and families another fun place to cool off,” said McAllen Mayor Pro-Tem and District 4 Commissioner Aida Ramirez. “It will also allow them to enjoy good, quality family time for a picnic lunch, birthday party or any social gathering.”

Parks and Recreation Director Sally Gavlik said her department plans to recycle the water used at the new Palm View Splash Pad. The water will be held in a nearby holding pond and used for irrigation purposes.

“The Palm View Splash Pad is an added amenity to a park that already has a community center, library, basketball court and playground,” Gavlik said.
