Weslaco --- Weslaco Beautiful, a committee of the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce, awarded their selections for the Commercial and Residential Beautification awards for the month of June. After looking around the city of Weslaco for landscapes that stand out, the committee meets once a month to nominate a business and a residence for the Beautification Awards.

The winner of June’s Commercial Beautification award was Sonic Drive-In, located at 303 N. Westgate Drive. Melissa Maples, part owner, was excited about receiving this distinction after putting in her own time and efforts into the landscape at Sonic.

“We have the lawns mowed bi-weekly, but my husband and I do the landscaping,” stated Maples. “We do what we can to keep everything trimmed up and as beautiful as it can be.”

Receiving the award, Maples said, makes her extremely proud to have one of the most beautiful places of business in Weslaco.

“It means a lot to us because we work really hard here,” commented Maples.

Retired teacher Joe Calvillo was the recipient of June’s Residential Beautification award located at 1400 Tangerine Drive. Mr. Calvillo said that the landscaping was a joint effort among his family members.

“The whole family in selecting the types of flowers and plants,” Calvillo stated. “The idea was to plant flowering trees and bushes. We try to maintain it as much as possible. We feel that it adds a lot to the house, and to the neighborhood.” Calvillo was honored to receive the award, and was happy to learn that he met all the necessary criteria for the distinction.

“It’s a big honor and I’m very flattered and humbled,” remarked Calvillo. “It makes me feel good that we’re doing the right thing.”

Weslaco Beautiful was established to develop and expand the awareness of recycling and litter prevention and work for the beautification and preservation of Weslaco's natural resources. TBB
