Texas Border Business ---

McALLEN --- Congratulations to IBC Bank, NHPO-RGV, The University of Phoenix, KURV,UTPA, Another Closet Self Storage, our media and many more businesses, restaurants, schools and volunteers for sending approximately 8,000 care packages to US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan through Operation Interdependence. Thank you to our RGV community for coming through in so many different ways, from donations, sponsorships, and volunteer hours, in order to help make this campaign a BIG success. We appreciate your support and commitment to ensure no soldier is forgotten.

The Packing Party on July 11 was a great family event with over 200 volunteers coming through the McAllen Chamber of Commerce to help put together the care packages. We had volunteers of all ages coming together for a great cause and playing a big part in this campaign to make this possible. We spent over two hours taking all the donated items and filling each goody bag with personal hygiene products, candy, snacks, crackers, etc. and a letter of appreciation.

University of Phoenix McAllen Campus staff and faculty members also joined IBC Bank and NHPO-RGV to recognize and show appreciation for the personal sacrifices made by active duty service members, reservists, Veterans and their families by hosting the Operation Interdependence Military Appreciation event at their campus on July 12. The event recognized local organizations and leaders who have led Operation Interdependence in McAllen. Veterans and active duty members shared their stories of receiving care packages and support while they served overseas. Senator Juan “Chuy”Hinojosa was also present as the special guest speaker honoring and thanking all Veterans and service men and women for their sacrifice to their families and their country. The program concluded with the presentation of a $5,000 donation from University of Phoenix to Operation Interdependence to support the efforts of this campaign.

The care packages were then delivered to the Houston Interdependence office on Saturday, July 14. They will be processed and delivered to the front lines over the next several days. We know we’ll be bringing a smile to many well-deserving military service men and women thanks to the generosity of many in our community. Thank you, Rio Grande Valley, for helping us send a “little piece of home” to our US troops!!
