Inspired by Dr. Ambrosio “Amos” Hernandez’s decision to run for public office, three candidates have joined forces to help move Pharr forward with bigger opportunities, increased accountability, and a better quality of life.

The candidates are: Eleazar Guajardo, math teacher at Valley View High School; Ricardo Medina, former Pharr mayor and commissioner; and Dr. Ramiro Caballero, neonatologist at McAllen Medical Center, Rio Grande Regional Hospital, Edinburg Regional Medical Center, Mission Regional Medical Center, and Knapp Medical Center.

With Dr. Hernandez on board, the team of four has named its campaign “Pharr Forward,” demonstrating the candidates’ forward-thinking perspective in direct contrast to their opponents’ slogan of “Pharr First.”

“Pharr says its first, but it’s not, and we can compete just as well as the larger cities when it comes to major issues,” said Dr. Hernandez. “Pharr Forward will provide the leadership, focus and determination to make it happen,” he continued.

“We have an excellent mix of varied career backgrounds and professional experiences both in and outside of the public service arena, and each of us offer unique strengths and business-oriented perspectives that will move Pharr forward,” said Dr. Hernandez of the group.

A neonatologist by trade, Dr. Caballero has extensive managerial experience in hospital administration, and has served on policy committees overseeing credentials, safety, and ethics – necessary components for managing a city. His main reason for seeking public office, however, is to use his professional experience to improve his hometown for its residents and families. “Just as I have enjoyed my career caring for the smallest and most vulnerable population of individuals – children – I am excited to get to work caring for our community – the people of Pharr,” said Dr. Caballero.

Guajardo brings a mix of educational experience and financial knowledge, having been a high school math teacher for 28 years and a tax adviser for 24 years. “I am eager to serve the city of Pharr as its commissioner and apply my financial experience to help manage the city in a fiscally responsible manner,” said Guajardo.

Medina, a health care administrator, previously served as Mayor and commissioner of Pharr, and brings a wealth of experience in city management. Medina returns to public service to help steer Pharr in a more positive direction. “Pharr has great potential as a city, and our team is ready to serve,” said Medina.
